Reduction in Abortion Rate

The latest Irish abortion figures released today by the British Department of Health show another reduction in the number of Irish women travelling to Britain for abortion.

In 2009, 4,422 Irish women travelled to Britain for abortions, down from 4,600 for the previous year. It is the eighth consecutive year that Irish abortions have declined after more than a decade of upward trends.

Finnish Study: Abortion Increases Risk of Suicide

What makes this Finnish study interesting and reliable is the fact that it is a record-based study and since Finland has socialized medical care the records used in the study are very accurate and complete. In an effort to evaluate the accuracy of maternal death reports, the researchers pulled the death certificate records for all the women of reproductive age (15-49) who died between1987 and 2000 - a total of 15823 women. They then culled through the national health care database to identify any pregnancy-related events for each of these women in the 12 months prior to their deaths. The study has shown that the risk of dying within a year after an abortion is several times higher than the risk of dying after miscarriage or childbirth. Using a subset of the same data, researchers reported that the risk of death from suicide within the year of an abortion was more than seven times higher than the risk of suicide within a year of childbirth.

Excellent Medical Care Not Abortion Protects Women's Lives

Some abortion advocates would have us believe that abortion is a positive option for some women in order to protect their health. However these claims only serve to create false and unnecessary fears about women’s health. They have ignored the very fact that Ireland without abortion is the safest country in the world in which to be pregnant. Here are a few articles on women’s health and abortion that I found interesting:
